A message from our Chair:

Hi guys,

Hope you’re well on this fine day. The new committee of your LGBT society would like to take a couple of minutes of your time to introduce ourselves and give you an idea of what it is that we want to do.

So, first things first, you may (or may not) have noticed that recently we’ve changed the society’s name to ‘Unity Bangor’. This is something that might come as a surprise to you (and might even get your knickers / boxers / thong in a twist) but please do hear us out. We are still the LGBT society; we still want to campaign for equality; we still want to provide an accepting environment for everyone regardless of sexuality and we will certainly still be bringing you a fantastic Fruit Salad every month. So fear not guys, your LGBT is still going strong, even if we do have a different name.

So, you’re probably thinking “why the change then?” The idea behind ‘Unity Bangor’ was to revamp LGBT with a new brand and a fresh outlook. After being voted on at a recent society meeting, we felt that the name ‘Pride’ was a bit outdated. We, as LGBT people, have spent decades out in the street screaming in the faces of straight people to accept us and now, in the 21st Century, it’s reasonable to say that we’re nearly there. However, there is still a fair way to go and with this in mind, we want (and need) to be a force against LGBT discrimination and to be proud of who and what we are. This involves uniting with other LGBT people for the cause, being a unified voice and… well, other things that involve being united (perhaps without Alex Ferguson’s involvement…).

You can probably see where we’re going with this – we want to bring together all factions of the camp – the gays, the lesbians, the bisexuals, the transgender, the queers, the queens, the don’t-knows andthe don’t-cares; to give us a single, strong and loud voice. The other element of this is to bring on board all those awesome straight friends you have, to help us out. We’re pretty sure that they’d be annoyed if they knew that because you’re a gay man you can’t give blood. And we reckon that they’d have something to say about the fact that some of you ladies were probably bullied at school because you kissed a girl (and you liked it). We think it’s time to pool our resources and stick it to the man.

Anyway, that’s more than enough from us. Basically, we just want to let you know that even though we might have a different name, we’re still about the same things. Also, at the moment we’re after a tag-line for a fancy new logo we’re designing. Something like: “Unity – representing and bringing together all LGBT people in Bangor.” You can probably come up with an idea if you think about it – so get in touch with any ideas for that, or any suggestion for anything. We want you to get involved!

Hoping you all have a wonderful summer,

The new Unity team.
